OPO · Porto and the north
Car hire at Porto Airport
The gateway to the Douro Valley, Braga, Guimarães and the Minho coast. Most northern motorways here are electronic-only, so the toll transponder matters most in this region.
Picking up the car
Rental desks are in the arrivals hall, with cars in the airport car park a short walk away. Off-airport companies run shuttles from the arrivals level.
Tolls
Several motorways around Porto (the A41, A42, A28 between Porto and Esposende, and the A29) have no booths, only overhead gantries that read a transponder or the number plate. Take the hire company's toll device. The A28 north of Esposende and the A4 beyond Amarante have been free since 2025. More on tolls

Tips for Porto
- Porto's centre is easier on foot and by metro; the metro runs from the airport to the city in about 30 minutes.
- For the Douro, the N222 between Peso da Régua and Pinhão is the scenic road. It is narrow and slow, so plan on more time than the map suggests.
- Book an automatic early if you need one: they are a small share of the fleet in the north.
