Guide
Driving a hire car into Spain
There are no border checks between Portugal and Spain, so it is easy to drive across without thinking. Do not: hire contracts limit where the car may go, and the insurance may not cover you in Spain unless you have told the company.

What to do
- Say you are going to Spain when you book, or at the latest at the desk, and make sure it is written on the agreement.
- Pay the cross-border fee if there is one. It is usually a fixed amount per rental, which varies a lot between companies.
- Ask whether breakdown assistance covers Spain, and keep the number to hand.
- Return the car to Portugal: one-way rentals ending in Spain are possible with some companies but cost much more.
If you cross without permission
The car is still insured for third-party damage, but the company's damage and theft cover may not apply, and the contract may allow it to charge a penalty. A breakdown in Spain can mean paying for the tow and repair yourself.
